Much of the world is celebrating Christmas this weekend. Even in cultures that do not have a heritage of Christianity, people everywhere know something about the Christmas season, whether about the Christ-child in the manger or the big guy in the red suit with all the reindeer. Christmas is literally a global holiday.
Of course, the roots of Christmas began over 2,000 years ago in a stable with a baby who later became known as Christ (from which we get Christ-mas). It certainly wasn’t a global holiday back then as it was pretty much confined to Bethlehem in Israel. Most residents of Bethlehem didn’t even know anything significant had happened on Christmas day. It would be a few hundred years before the organized church would declare December 25 as Jesus’ birthday (and we’re not necessarily certain about the exact day). But what we all have is a season to celebrate as a family.
Our family collects nativity scenes of various shapes and sizes to display around our home. For us, it is a constant reminder from the day after Thanksgiving that Christmas is all about the baby in the manger who grew to become the Savior of the world. It’s our faith story. And it brings Vivian and I lasting peace.
Most families have some sort of story that really defines their celebrations of Christmas.
Santa, of course, is a big deal. We have a neighbor who is a real Santa (nothing artificial about him). The Nutcracker ballet is a big tradition during the holidays. We collect nutcrackers both great and small. And lights are always fun, though we are way more conservative than Clark Griswold! There are myriad family stories that reflect how we celebrate this wonderful season. What’s your story?
